U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged on Wednesday while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One that the U.S. Constitution prohibits him from running for a third term, LETA reported citing AFP.

“I have the highest ratings of all time, and, you know, based on what I’ve read, I believe I’m not allowed to run, so we’ll see what happens… It’s a shame,” Trump said.

The U.S. Constitution provides for a two-term limit for presidents, and Trump began his second term in January.

Trump, who served as president from 2017 to 2021, has repeatedly claimed that his supporters urged him to stay in power even after his current term ends, despite the constitutional limit.

Recently, Trump also placed a red cap reading “Trump 2028” on his desk in the Oval Office.

Among his supporters, there is a popular theory that current Vice President James David Vance could run for president in 2028, while Trump would run for vice president. In this scenario, if Vance were to win, he would soon leave office, and Trump would become president again.

On Monday, Trump stated that he would not run for vice president in the 2028 election, and today he added that it is “quite clear” that he will no longer be able to run. “But we have a lot of great people,” he added.
