Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Summons Representative of Belarusian Embassy

On Monday, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry summoned the representative of the Belarusian embassy regarding violations of its airspace by meteorological balloons.

The representative of the Belarusian embassy was "once again expressed a strong protest regarding the ongoing violations of Lithuania's airspace by Belarus," the statement said.

"It was noted that the deliberate inaction of Belarusian authorities is considered by Lithuania as a hybrid attack. Belarus was urged to take its responsibilities as a state seriously and to take immediate measures to prevent such hybrid attacks," the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry added.

The ministry also informed the representative of the Belarusian embassy about the decision to close the border "until further notice."

Lithuanian airports were closed three times over the past weekend due to threats from balloons, leading to the cancellation of 112 flights and affecting more than 16,500 passengers.

The closure of the Lithuanian border with Belarus does not affect transit to the Kaliningrad region, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry stated.
