Trump hopes for China's help in ending the war in Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope that the upcoming talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping will discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine, LETA reports citing BBC.

Trump made this statement to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to Asia, where the White House occupant plans to spend five days. He will visit Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea, and will also participate in a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which will begin on Sunday in Kuala Lumpur.

Trump was asked whether he hopes for China's assistance in resolving the war between Russia and Ukraine.

"We would like China to help us with Russia," the U.S. president replied. "We have imposed very tough sanctions on Russia. I believe these sanctions will have serious power. But I would like China to help us."

China claims to maintain a neutral position regarding Russia's war against Ukraine, has not joined Western sanctions against Moscow, continues to supply it with dual-use goods, and purchases significant volumes of Russian oil.

At a recent EU summit in Brussels, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that China is not interested in Ukraine's victory and Russia's defeat.

Reporters also asked Trump whether he fears that the sanctions he imposed on Russia will lead to escalation from Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

"I don’t think so. I want to say that he stated that the sanctions will not have a big impact. That’s what he said. I don’t think he is right. We will see what happens. I think he also wants to put an end to this," the U.S. president responded.

This week, Trump imposed sanctions on the two largest Russian oil companies – Rosneft and Lukoil. Commenting on this decision, Putin stated that it is a serious step that damages relations between the U.S. and Russia, but it will not have a significant impact on the Russian economy.
