Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Šakalienė announced that she has decided to resign, but will discuss this matter with President Gitanas Nausėda first, LRT.
According to the minister, if she does not have the trust of Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, then there are no possibilities to work in the government.
"I agreed with the President of Lithuania that I will not submit my resignation to the Prime Minister without talking to him. I have a draft resignation letter, and today I will talk to the President. For now, I see no reasons that could change my decision because this is politics," said Šakalienė to reporters.
According to Šakalienė, she has been striving with all her might to ensure that Lithuania's defense is properly funded and that the armed forces are strengthened as quickly as possible.
As reported by bb.lv, it became clear last week that the actual funding for the Lithuanian army will be only 4.87% of GDP, rather than the 5.38% of GDP (4.79 billion euros) that the authorities had promised.
After this, the Commander of the Lithuanian Army, General Raimundas Vaikšnoras, stated in an interview with LRT that "you don't fight with sidewalk tiles," hinting at the misallocation of funds.
