U.S. President Donald Trump called Ukraine's victory in the war with Russia theoretically possible, but unlikely. A month earlier, he stated that Ukraine, with the support of the EU, would be able to reclaim all its territories, DW reports.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he does not believe in Ukraine's victory in the war with Russia, while noting that theoretically it is possible. Trump made this statement during a joint appearance with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday, October 20.
"They can still win. I don’t think they will win, but theoretically they can. I never said they would win - I said they could win. Anything can happen," Trump was quoted by CNN.
Less than a month ago, the head of the White House claimed that Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, "is capable of fighting and reclaiming" all its territory within its former borders. "Over time, with patience and financial support from Europe and, in particular, NATO, restoring the original borders from which this war started is quite possible," the American leader indicated.
Trump’s Call to 'Divide' Donbas
On October 19, the U.S. President stated that to end the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Donbas region should be "divided," with a larger part remaining under Russian control. "Let everything stay as it is. It is already divided. I think 78% of the region is already occupied by Russia," Trump said, adding that Russia and Ukraine would be able to agree "on something later."
On the same day, Trump also denied information from a Financial Times article - it claimed that the U.S. President urged Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky to give all of Donbas, which includes parts of three Ukrainian regions - Donetsk, Luhansk, and Dnipropetrovsk - to Russia.
