Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan could play an important role in ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on the way from Egypt to the U.S., LETA reported, citing BBC.
"Erdogan can," Trump replied when asked if any leaders, particularly Erdogan, could help stop the war between Russia and Ukraine.
"He is respected in Russia. I can't say anything about Ukraine, but Putin respects him, and he (Erdogan) is my friend," Trump noted.
Earlier, Erdogan had repeatedly offered Turkey's support for efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine.
Several rounds of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have already taken place in Turkey, during which the parties managed to agree on a prisoner exchange.
