Hungarian Prime Minister Orban stated that Europe is "drifting towards war faster and faster" and announced the collection of signatures against "Brussels' military plans" in his country, DW reports.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has begun collecting signatures against 'Brussels' military plans' in his country. He announced this on his Facebook page on Saturday, October 11.

"We are facing a hot autumn. Europe is drifting towards war faster and faster," wrote the Hungarian Prime Minister. He accused European politicians of wanting to make "Europe pay, Ukrainians fight, and Russia exhaust itself." "In Denmark (at the European Political Community summit in Copenhagen on October 2. - Ed.), I made it clear: we do not want this. Since then, a campaign against Hungary has started."

In response to the actions of the EU leadership, Orban continues, Hungary will begin collecting signatures "against Brussels' military plans." "We will be in every city and every village because now we need all peace-loving Hungarians!" he concluded.

FT: EU Wants to Change the Accession Procedure to Avoid Hungary's Veto for Ukraine

At the end of September, the Financial Times reported, citing informed sources in Brussels, that the EU authorities are preparing to start technical work on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to its ranks. In particular, the European Commission, the journalists write, has proposed to adjust its rules to bypass Orban's veto. To this end, it is proposed to start technical work with Ukraine and Moldova in several clusters (thematic negotiation groups), despite the absence of an official decision to start such negotiations. This scheme would allow Kyiv and Chisinau to continue reforms, adapt their regulatory framework to EU standards, and other institutional preparations, EU officials believe. And as soon as Hungary lifts its veto, the formalities could be expedited, sources told the publication.

A senior EU official previously told DW on condition of anonymity that opening negotiation clusters for Ukraine's accession to the European Union would only be possible if Orban's party loses power in Hungary following the parliamentary elections in April 2026.

At the moment, he reminded, the decision to open negotiation clusters is made only unanimously, and proposals to change this approach have so far remained "at the level of discussions."
