Stains, streaks, and fingerprints on the TV screen make you want to remove them with a familiar window cleaning product. After all, the surface seems glassy — so it can be cleaned like regular glass. However, experts warn: such cleaning can end with irreversible damage to the screen.
Why Window Cleaner is Dangerous for Your TV
Modern flat-screen TVs have a special anti-glare coating. It reduces reflections and makes the image more comfortable for the eyes.
The problem is that many window cleaning products contain quite aggressive solvents. They can damage or partially remove the protective coating on the screen.
As a result, permanent streaks, spots, or discolored areas may appear on the surface. And regular cleaning will not be able to remove them — defects will be noticeable while watching TV.
Samsung, for example, recommends not to use window cleaning products, soap, cleaning powders, or any compositions containing alcohol, benzene, or ammonia on television screens. The surfaces of LCD screens are quite soft and sensitive, so exposure to strong chemicals can lead to irreversible damage.
Vinegar and Alcohol Are Also Not the Best Option
You can find many home recipes online suggesting wiping the TV screen with vinegar, alcohol, universal cleaning agents, or window cleaning solutions.
However, experts advise against experimenting. Such substances can damage the protective film of the screen.
Caution is also required when purchasing special products labeled "for screens." This designation alone does not guarantee that the composition is suitable for a specific TV.
Therefore, before using such a product, it is better to check the manufacturer's recommendations. Some companies produce their own compositions for screen care.
What to Use to Wipe the TV
The safest option often turns out to be the simplest — a soft dry microfiber cloth without any cleaning agents.
If the dry cloth does not cope with stubborn fingerprints, it can be slightly moistened with distilled water or a screen cleaning solution approved by the TV manufacturer.
Distilled water is preferable to regular tap water because it does not contain minerals that can leave marks after drying.
There is one more important rule: never spray water or cleaning solution directly on the TV screen. The liquid should be used to slightly moisten the cloth, after which the surface should be gently wiped without applying strong pressure.
What works well for dirt on windows and mirrors may not necessarily be suitable for a TV. Glass cleaner, alcohol, ammonia, or vinegar can damage the protective coating of the screen. In most cases, a microfiber cloth is sufficient for safe cleaning, and for heavy soiling — a small amount of distilled water.
