After 45–50, vision begins to change even for those who have never complained about their eyes before. Most age-related changes are natural, but some symptoms may indicate serious diseases that, without timely treatment, can lead to irreversible vision loss.

As we age, all organs and systems of the body gradually change, and the eyes are no exception. After the age of 40, natural aging processes occur that affect visual acuity and the ability of the eyes to adapt to stress.

As ophthalmologist Ivan Tereshchenko explained, it is important to distinguish normal age-related changes from dangerous diseases. While the former can usually be corrected and do not pose a serious threat, the latter require timely diagnosis and treatment, and sometimes surgical intervention.

That is why after the age of 45, specialists recommend undergoing a comprehensive eye examination at least once a year.

Symptoms that should not be ignored

Some signs may indicate the development of serious eye diseases.

Cataract manifests as a constant feeling of fog or veil in front of the eyes, deterioration of color perception, and reduced quality of night vision. Without treatment, the disease gradually progresses.

Glaucoma may be accompanied by narrowing of the visual field, the appearance of rainbow circles around light sources, as well as severe eye pain radiating to the temple or head. This disease is dangerous because it can lead to irreversible vision loss.

Age-related macular degeneration manifests as the appearance of "blind" spots, distortion of straight lines, and deterioration of central vision.

Diabetic retinopathy often causes blurred vision, sudden deterioration of vision, and the appearance of threads, dark spots, or flashes in front of the eyes.

Particularly dangerous symptoms include sudden flashes of light, sparks, or a dark veil in front of the eyes — these may indicate retinal detachment and require immediate medical attention.

What changes are considered normal for age

Not all changes in vision after 45 indicate disease.

Natural age-related processes include:

  • development of presbyopia (age-related farsightedness), making it difficult to read small text up close;

  • dry eye syndrome, accompanied by burning, redness, and a feeling of sand in the eyes;

  • gradual narrowing of peripheral vision;

  • reduction in pupil size, requiring more light for reading;

  • decreased perception of brightness and contrast;

  • age-related changes in the vitreous body, which can cause the appearance of "floaters" in front of the eyes.

According to the specialist, these processes are part of the natural aging of the body, but they should also be monitored during regular check-ups.

After 45, regular vision checks become as important a part of prevention as monitoring blood pressure or blood sugar levels. If there is a sudden deterioration in vision, flashes of light, a dark veil, severe eye pain, or narrowing of the visual field, delaying a visit to the ophthalmologist is not an option — early diagnosis significantly increases the chances of preserving vision.
