Phone scammers constantly change their deception scripts, playing on trust, fear, and urgency. Cybersecurity experts advise against engaging in long conversations with strangers and remembering a few simple phrases after which scammers often end the call themselves.

Scammers regularly come up with new ways to extract money or personal data. Today, they may present themselves as employees of banks, government agencies, delivery services, or even psychological services. Their main task is to make a person feel confused and act without thinking.

Therefore, experts recommend staying calm and not making decisions under pressure.

Cybersecurity expert Hector Chavez advises using several simple phrases that help quickly understand who is on the other end of the line.

"How can I help you?"

This phrase forces the interlocutor to move from a prepared script to a specific explanation of the reason for the call. Often, scammers start to get confused or repeat general phrases.

"I am putting you on speakerphone and recording the conversation"

According to the expert, such a statement can make the perpetrator end the conversation. Many scammers do not want their words to be recorded, so they prefer to hang up immediately.

"I will call back myself. Please provide the official hotline number"

A legitimate employee of a bank or company will easily provide the official phone number, which can be verified on the organization’s website.

If the interlocutor starts insisting that there is no time, the line is busy, or that the issue needs to be resolved urgently right now, this is a serious reason to be cautious.

What Should Raise Suspicion

Experts remind us: scammers almost always try to create a sense of urgency. Most often, you can hear phrases like:

  • "You have very little time";

  • "You need to act immediately";

  • "If you don’t confirm the information now, your account will be blocked";

  • "The operation cannot be delayed".

It is this rush that deprives a person of the opportunity to calmly assess the situation.

How to Act Correctly

If the call concerns a bank card, loan, delivery, or government services, it is better to end the conversation immediately and contact the organization yourself using the phone number listed on its official website or on the back of the bank card.

Never disclose SMS codes, passwords, PIN codes, CVV codes of bank cards, or other personal data to strangers, even if the interlocutor claims to be an employee of the bank or law enforcement.

The main weapon of phone scammers is not technology, but psychological pressure. The calmer you react and the more often you verify information yourself, the less likely you are to become a victim of fraud. If the conversation raises even the slightest doubts, it is better to hang up immediately and contact the organization using official contacts.
