People with light eyes often squint in the sun, complain of glare and discomfort in bright weather. According to ophthalmologists, the reason lies in the structural features of the iris and the amount of protective pigment melanin.

Many have noticed that some people can walk calmly under bright sunlight without sunglasses, while others begin to feel discomfort after just a few minutes outside. This is especially true for those with blue and gray eyes.

As ophthalmologist Anna Shamarova explains, the color of the iris is directly related to the amount of melanin — a pigment that serves not only an aesthetic but also a protective function.

Why Brown-Eyed People Find It Easier to Tolerate the Sun

The more melanin present in the iris, the darker the eyes. This pigment partially absorbs light rays and reduces their scattering inside the eye.

"Melanin acts as a natural filter that helps protect the eyes from excess light and ultraviolet radiation," explains Anna Shamarova.

Therefore, brown-eyed individuals usually find it easier to tolerate bright lighting and experience unpleasant sensations less frequently in sunny weather.

People with blue and gray eyes have significantly less melanin. Light penetrates the eye more freely and scatters more, which can cause a feeling of excessive brightness.

Not a Disease, but a Feature

Experts emphasize that this is not about worse vision. Blue-eyed people see colors and objects just as well as brown-eyed individuals.

The difference lies in the level of light comfort.

Among the most common complaints:

  • increased sensitivity to bright light;
  • discomfort and stinging in the eyes;
  • dazzling glare;
  • the need to squint constantly;
  • temporary deterioration of vision when stepping out of the shade into the sun.

"Light-colored eyes can be compared to a lens without an additional light filter. They let in more light, so a person has to adapt more to bright lighting," specialists note.

Are There Advantages to Light Eyes?

At the same time, nature has also provided some advantages.

Research shows that people with light eyes may adapt slightly better to twilight and low-light conditions.

Experts emphasize: it cannot be said that one eye color is better than another. They are simply different variations of human adaptation to the environment.

Why the Problem Becomes More Noticeable in Summer

In warm weather, the strain on the eyes increases. Sun rays reflect off water, sand, light asphalt, glass facades, and other surfaces.

For people with light eyes, this light load often feels more pronounced.

"In summer, the eyes are exposed not only to direct sunlight but also to a large number of reflected rays. Therefore, protection becomes especially important," warn ophthalmologists.

How to Protect Your Eyes from the Sun

Specialists recommend using sunglasses with UV400 labeling, which provides protection against UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays.

For urban conditions, lenses of the second or third category of darkness are optimal.

For those who constantly wear prescription glasses, photochromic lenses that automatically change the degree of darkness depending on the lighting are suitable.

Sports and outdoor enthusiasts are advised to pay attention to polarized lenses, which effectively eliminate glare from water, roads, and other surfaces.

Additionally, on sunny days, it is beneficial to wear hats with brims or wide brims.

"Ultraviolet rays affect the eyes just like they do the skin. Prolonged exposure is associated with an increased risk of developing cataracts and certain retinal diseases," warn ophthalmologists.

Light eyes do not mean worse vision; however, their owners are indeed more sensitive to bright sunlight. In summer, it is especially important for blue-eyed and gray-eyed individuals to protect their eyes from ultraviolet rays to maintain not only comfort but also eye health for many years.
