Doctors Named the Best Time for Dinner — and It’s Not 6:00 PM

Experts believe that the popular rule of "not eating after six in the evening" is outdated. According to doctors, the optimal time for dinner is between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM, when the body still has time to digest food calmly before sleep.

The popular advice of "not eating after six" has a rational explanation; however, the key factor is not the specific time but the interval between dinner and sleep.

When Is the Best Time to Have Dinner?

According to recommendations from doctors and researchers, the optimal time for an evening meal is between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM. This allows the body to digest food calmly before nighttime rest.

Why Shouldn’t You Have Dinner Late?

Experts note that an early dinner reduces the load on the gastrointestinal tract and improves sleep quality. Additionally, the body has more time for recovery and normal metabolism.

This is especially important for people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, or acid reflux. Furthermore, an early meal helps stabilize blood sugar levels.

Researchers explain that if a person regularly eats late in the evening, the body remains in active digestion mode longer and does not transition to recovery processes and fat burning.

Over time, a disrupted eating schedule leads to weight gain.

What Foods Should Be Avoided Before Sleep?

Before bedtime, doctors advise against consuming fatty foods, as they take a long time to digest and cause heaviness in the stomach.

The ban also applies to caffeine (coffee, chocolate) and energy drinks, which “kill” sleep.

Experts specifically warn about alcohol. Despite seeming relaxation, alcohol disrupts deep sleep phases and negatively affects nighttime recovery.

Doctors emphasize that what matters for health is not the specific hour of dinner but a sufficient interval between eating and sleeping. Properly timed evening meals help improve sleep, maintain normal metabolism, and control weight more easily.
