How to Remove Sweat Stains from a White Shirt: 7 Effective Methods

Summer heat and unpleasant yellow marks on white clothing are a problem many face.

Sweat stains on clothing actually occur not only due to sweat. Unpleasant yellow marks appear as a result of the interaction of aluminum-containing antiperspirants with our skin. Doctors note that aluminum deodorants may not be the healthiest, but without this element, antiperspirants lose their effectiveness.

When washing in a machine, even at high temperatures, these stains may remain. But do not despair! There are ways to restore your favorite white item to its original appearance using accessible means found in the kitchen.

To combat yellowness, household soap, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, vinegar, and salt work great. Let’s consider how and with what to mix them to restore the whiteness of the shirt.

7 Effective Methods

Method 1

Your main helper will be household soap. Despite its not-so-pleasant smell and color, it effectively deals with sweat marks. Soak the item in soapy water for 15 minutes, then wash as usual. The stains will disappear if they are fresh.

Method 2

An effective mixture is made by combining three tablespoons of liquid soap with one tablespoon of baking soda and one tablespoon of salt. Apply the mixture to the stain, leave it for half an hour, and then wash as usual.

Method 3

Another option is baking soda with water. Dissolve the baking soda in water to a paste-like consistency, apply it to the stain, wait 15 minutes, and then send the item for washing.

Method 4

Use hydrogen peroxide. Pour it into a spray bottle and spray the yellow stains, leaving it for 15 minutes. After washing, the item will look like new.

Method 5

For old stains, you can use gasoline or ammonia. Wipe the stains, then rinse the clothing in warm soapy water.

Method 6

Salt will also help remove stains. Prepare a solution: dissolve one tablespoon of salt in one tablespoon of water. Soak a cotton pad and wipe the stain, then rinse in warm water. This method is suitable for wool and silk clothing.

Method 7

For more difficult cases, use vinegar. Dilute vinegar in warm water at a ratio of 1:2 and soak the shirt for at least 20 minutes. Then mix half a cup of baking soda with one tablespoon of salt and one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide to make a paste. Remove the shirt from the vinegar, wring it out, and apply the paste to the armpits. Leave it for another 20 minutes, then shake off the excess baking soda and send it for washing.

Choose a method carefully to avoid damaging the item. Try it first on the inside. If there is no reaction, feel free to use the method. The right choice will help restore the clothing to its original appearance.

A Well-Forgotten Old Method

If nothing helps, you can resort to the old method of boiling, which is suitable only for natural cotton. This method is not suitable for other materials.

Boiling recipe: in a large pot, pour water, add soap grated on a grater, and place the item in the solution. Put the pot on the fire and boil for 2–3 hours. After that, simply wash the clothing in the usual mode with the addition of fabric softener.

By the Way

Another problem faced by lovers of white clothing is rust. If you wash a shirt together with an item that has metal decor or buttons and do not hang it immediately, rusty stains can appear instantly.
