Why Women Fall Down Stairs More Often Than Men: Study Explains

American scientists from Purdue University found that women are four times more likely than men to sustain injuries from falling down stairs. As reported by PLOS ONE, the issue lies not only in footwear but also in behavioral traits.

Main Reasons

Analysis of video recordings of 2,400 people showed that most falls occur due to inattention. People get distracted by gadgets, do not hold onto railings, and do not watch their steps.

Female Habits That Increase Risk

Researchers noted that women often multitask — for example, texting while fixing their hair, keeping both hands busy. Add high heels and heavy bags to the mix, and losing balance becomes almost inevitable.

Men, on the other hand, are more likely to get injured due to bravado — jumping down steps or hurrying without looking at their feet.

Experts remind us that simple safety measures — holding onto railings, watching where you step, and not using your phone on stairs — significantly reduce the risk of falls.
