When Politics is Stronger than Conscience: Why People Justify «Their Own»

American scientists have found that political views often turn out to be more important to a person than moral principles. As reported by Naked Science, most people are willing to turn a blind eye to immoral actions if they are committed by like-minded individuals.

What the Study Showed

Surveys covering different age and ideological groups found that people are equally inclined to justify 'their own' and condemn 'others', even when the actions are the same. Moreover, respondents often admitted that they were willing to violate moral norms themselves if it would help 'their side'.

Why This Happens

Scientists believe that political beliefs become part of personal identity for many. When morality conflicts with political loyalty, a person chooses what is closer to their 'self'. As a result, politics begins to dictate behavior more strongly than the principles of good and evil.

Researchers note that this phenomenon partially explains why 'dirty tactics' and manipulation thrive in politics.
