Scientists have discovered that the human brain is getting smaller — but this does not make us less intelligent

Research has shown that the human brain is gradually decreasing in volume. Over the past 40,000 years, its size has shrunk by about 10%.

Anthropologists note that changes in brain volume have occurred over millions of years. The maximum size of the skull was reached during the Mesolithic period — between 15,000 and 12,000 years ago. At that time, the average brain volume was 1600 cm³ for men and 1500 cm³ for women.

By studying data from 12,000 people around the world, scientists found that the brains of modern men are on average 160 ml smaller, while women's brains are 250 ml smaller. These results have been confirmed multiple times, although a precise explanation has not yet been found.

There are several theories regarding this phenomenon. Some experts believe that the brain is shrinking due to adaptation to climate change. Others associate it with increased energy efficiency of the body. There is also a hypothesis that the reduction in brain volume is a consequence of the 'domestication' of humans, similar to animals living alongside people.

At the same time, specialists emphasize that brain volume is not related to intelligence.
