Menopause in the Family: What to Expect — Like Mom or Like Grandma?

Many believe that menopause occurs at roughly the same age for women in the same family — for grandmothers, mothers, and daughters. But is this really the case?

What is Menopause

Menopause is a natural physiological stage that concludes a woman's reproductive period. During this time, ovarian function gradually declines, and the production of estrogens — key "female" hormones that influence sexual desire, overall well-being, and fertility — decreases.

"From a genetic standpoint, the age of onset of menopause in a family can be similar. Talking to your mother or grandmother can help you understand when to expect the cessation of menstrual cycles," explains gynecologist Elena Stetsyuk.

Average Age and Possible Deviations

On average, menstruation ceases around the age of 52. However, there are known cases of early menopause — before the age of 45. This can also be linked to hereditary traits: mutations in certain chromosomes accelerate the onset of menopause in women within the same family.

Influencing Factors

The age at which menopause occurs for a specific woman depends not only on genetics but also on numerous factors:

  • chronic diseases;
  • dietary habits;
  • constant stress that damages the endocrine glands;
  • living in environmentally unfavorable areas;
  • surgical interventions for gynecological reasons;
  • multiple ovulation stimulations during IVF.

Additionally, it has been proven that women who smoke may experience menopause 1–3 years earlier.

Important Understanding

Menopause should not be viewed as a disease — it is a natural stage in every woman's life. The timing of its onset and the characteristics of its progression depend on the nervous system, living conditions, and gynecological health status.
