One of the largest scientific reviews published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet confirmed the high level of safety and efficacy of mRNA vaccines. Researchers analyzed the results of clinical trials, data on drug production, and the experience of administering billions of doses worldwide.
An international group of scientists from Canada, the UK, Hong Kong, and the USA presented one of the largest reviews dedicated to mRNA vaccine technology after the COVID-19 pandemic in the journal The Lancet.
The authors analyzed the results of clinical trials, real-world medical practice data, and information on the production of the drugs. The analysis was based on the experience of administering billions of doses of vaccines worldwide.
Messenger RNA vaccines work by delivering a short mRNA molecule into cells, containing instructions for synthesizing a fragment of viral protein. After this, the immune system generates a protective response, and the mRNA molecule itself is quickly destroyed and does not remain in the body.
Researchers note that the accumulated data confirm the high efficacy of this technology in preventing infectious diseases, including COVID-19. Furthermore, the mRNA platform is considered one of the most promising directions for creating personalized vaccines against cancer based on the individual characteristics of tumors.
The review also separately addresses common myths about mRNA vaccines. The authors emphasize that the technology does not alter human DNA, as the mRNA molecule does not enter the cell nucleus and does not interact with genetic material.
Among the advantages of the platform, researchers cite the ability to rapidly create new vaccines, scalability of production, and the capacity to elicit a strong immune response.
The lead author of the study, biomedical engineer Anna Blackney from the University of British Columbia, noted that the vast amount of accumulated data allows for a high degree of reliability in assessing the technology.
At the same time, scientists do not hide known risks. In rare cases, allergic reactions may occur after vaccination, as well as myocarditis — inflammation of the heart muscle, which was more frequently observed in young men. The authors note that such complications are rare, usually reversible, and require medical monitoring.
According to the researchers, when assessing safety, it is essential to consider the benefit-risk ratio. Vaccination significantly reduces the likelihood of severe infections, hospitalization, and mortality, and also helps protect individuals for whom vaccination is contraindicated for medical reasons.
Manish Sadarani, director of the Vaccine Evaluation Center at the British Columbia Children’s Hospital, emphasized that open and transparent presentation of safety data remains a crucial condition for public trust in modern medical technologies.
The authors of the review concluded that mRNA vaccines are a well-studied medical platform with proven efficacy and a known safety profile. Today, this technology is viewed not only as a means of combating COVID-19 but also as a promising basis for developing new vaccines and treatment methods for infectious and oncological diseases.
