In another match of the World Ice Hockey Championship, the Latvian national team defeated the British team with a score of 6:0.
Goals scored by: Maris Dzierkals, Denis Smirnov, Rudolf Balcers (1st period), Eduards Tralmaks, Haralds Egle, Krastenbergs (2nd period). In the 3rd period, the British changed their goalkeeper and kept their net intact.
By the way, Balcers continues to score in every match, leading in the number of goals in this championship and approaching the “eternal” record of Helmuts Balderis.
It is clear that the British national team has not yet reached the highest world league. The British have lost six games out of six, conceding an average of 5 goals per match.
Moreover, Latvia can be proud that in the current World Championship, it has already defeated two Olympic champions. These are the USA, who became the strongest in February in Olympic Turin, and Great Britain — the Olympic champion in hockey of 1936.
Of course, we would like to see a third such victory. There is a chance for that. Depending on the results of the last games in the group stage, the Latvian national team is likely to face either Canada (9-time Olympic winners) or the Czech Republic (1998 Olympic champion) in the quarterfinals.
The last match in their group will be held by the Latvian team on Tuesday, May 26 — a meeting with the Hungarian national team is scheduled for 13:20.
