Karim Khan, the Prosecutor General of the ICC, has been suspended following allegations of sexual harassment.

The investigation lasted for a year and a half and revealed serious violations in his conduct.

On the night from Monday to Tuesday, global media reported the suspension of Karim Khan, the Prosecutor General of the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The decision was made after the completion of an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment, which lasted about a year and a half.

According to sources from Reuters, court authorities concluded that Khan committed "serious violations" in his behavior.

Details of the allegations and Khan's response

Allegations against Karim Khan emerged in 2024 when one of his close associates claimed that he repeatedly subjected her to harassment and coerced her into sexual acts.

This case has caused a wide resonance in legal and political circles around the world. Khan himself categorically denied all allegations; however, the results of the investigation indicate serious violations of professional ethics.

Procedure for suspension and possible dismissal

The process of suspending and potentially dismissing the Prosecutor General of the ICC has no precedent in the court's history.

According to current procedures, only the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute—the governing and supervisory body of the court, which includes representatives from all 125 countries that ratified the document—can make a decision on Khan's final dismissal.

A majority vote in a secret ballot is required for this. As of now, the date for the meeting to discuss this issue has not been set, but the Assembly has stated that it will be convened as soon as possible.

Consequences for the International Criminal Court

The suspension of Karim Khan casts a shadow over the activities of the International Criminal Court, which has played a key role in investigating war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity for many years.

Khan, who has held the position of Prosecutor General since 2021, gained widespread notoriety, particularly for issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Now he himself faces serious allegations that could put an end to his international career.

Since May 2025, Karim Khan has been on leave pending the results of the investigation. Following his official suspension, his future will depend on the decision of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute. If a majority of member states votes for his dismissal, he will lose his position as Prosecutor General of the International Criminal Court.
