The parties forming the new government of Latvia under the leadership of Andris Kulbergs have signed a coalition agreement and a cabinet declaration. Among the main priorities are security, increased defense spending, the economy, and stricter discipline within the coalition.
The parties of the future ruling coalition have officially formalized their agreements to form a new government.
On Wednesday, representatives of the "United List," the National Alliance, the Union of Greens and Farmers, and "New Unity" signed the coalition agreement and the government declaration under the leadership of Andris Kulbergs.
The document stipulates stricter rules for the operation of the coalition and its ministers. The partners commit to maintaining strict discipline, acting in concert, and not concealing potential violations.
The agreement emphasizes the principle of zero tolerance for corruption and offenses. It also provides that the coalition will make the most important decisions only unanimously. Ministers are promised specific goals, and the prime minister will be able to demand their resignation in case of failure to meet tasks.
In fact, the new cabinet immediately emphasizes the governability of the government — against the backdrop of conflicts and internal crises that accompanied the previous coalition.
The main priority of the new government is named security. The coalition intends to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, strengthen the state border and air defense system, as well as develop the local military industry. The declaration specifically mentions continued support for Ukraine. At the same time, the government promises stricter migration control, support for entrepreneurship and exports, as well as adherence to budget discipline.
In the social sphere, the coalition promises to expand support for families, introduce a basic pension, and increase healthcare funding. Against the backdrop of rising security expenditures, the balance between defense and social promises may become one of the main challenges for the new cabinet.
The vote to approve the government in the Saeima is scheduled for Thursday. After that, the powers of the cabinet of Evika Silina will officially end.
In the new government, Foreign Minister Baiba Broka, Health Minister Hosam Abu Meri, Economy Minister Viktor Valainis, and Welfare Minister Reinis Uzulnieks will retain their positions.
Andris Kulbergs himself will lead the government for the first time.
Currently, the attention of politicians and observers is focused on whether the new coalition can maintain stability — especially considering the ambitious promises and the complex international situation.
