An expert explained one feature of Latvian politics.

Martins Kaprans, a leading researcher at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the University of Latvia, noted one feature of Latvian politics during a discussion on TV-24: despite the significant social stratification in Latvia, meaning the gap between the rich and the poor, social-democratic ideas do not dominate in society. For the past three decades, the right has primarily been in power in Latvia, successfully playing the national card.

"Why is this happening? Why does the theme of social inequality not dominate in politics? I asked this question to veteran Latvian politician Juris Dobelis. He gave a very simple but very accurate answer - issues related to national self-awareness are easier to present! The topic of social inequality and the fight against it is very difficult to 'sell,'" said M. Kaprans. Moreover, the topic of overcoming social inequality touches on a very dangerous issue of tax redistribution - that is, taking more from the rich to help the poor.
