The 'New Unity' has no plan 'B' - without Prime Minister Siliņa

Political scientist on how the current government will 'survive' until the elections.

Any event could lead to the collapse of the government led by Evika Siliņa ('New Unity'), said political scientist Iveta Kažoka in an interview with Latvian Radio.

The Union of Greens and Farmers (UGF), according to the political scientist, is testing the limits of the government for the second time with the aim of dismantling it, which would create a competitive advantage ahead of the Saeima elections in the fall. Kažoka suggested that in the end, the 'green farmers' did not want to be the ones to overthrow the government over such an 'airBaltic' issue.

According to Kažoka, the 'Progressives' are indifferent regarding the overthrow of the government, as they have not wanted to take responsibility for the transport sector since the replacement of the previous Minister of Transport Kaspars Briškens. Kažoka suggested that the party would be glad if 'someone relieved them of it.'

The political scientist explained in the interview with Latvian Radio that the situation for 'New Unity' is very complicated. They have managed to maintain the government and overshadow the scandal related to the Prime Minister's expenses, but they must continue to take responsibility for transport issues as well as for the work of the 'dysfunctional' government. The scandal surrounding the Prime Minister's expenses could also resurface.

In her opinion, 'New Unity' has no 'plan B' - without Prime Minister Siliņa, with any possible other candidate for Prime Minister. That is, it will continue to support the government and hope that in the elections people will vote for them as the lesser evil.

She noted that 'theoretically, any issue could explode.' If any party does not want to be in the government, it can find some issue to 'bring' to the agenda.
