The Prime Minister moves the coalition council and urgently convenes an extraordinary government meeting today.
As planned, today at 15:00 the ruling politicians were supposed to gather for a weekly coalition council meeting. Among other issues, the discussion was to include tomorrow's consideration by the budget commission of the Saeima regarding the provision of a loan to airBaltic. However, Evika Silina decided to "go all in" this morning - she moved the coalition council to 13:00 and scheduled an extraordinary government meeting at 15:00 with one agenda item - the situation at the national airline airBaltic. The Prime Minister explained this move by referring to social partners - the Chamber of Commerce and the Exporters' Association, who urged that the loan of 30 million be granted to airBaltic, while demanding a clear recapitalization plan from the airline.
According to rumors from the corridors of power, through the extraordinary meeting, Silina will attempt to pressure the "green farmers" and force them to support the decision on the loan in the Saeima tomorrow. In exchange, the Minister of Transport and the airline's management will have to accept a number of conditions - in particular, to implement draconian austerity measures, including salary cuts in the company's administration. The government meeting will be held behind closed doors.
