Ministers will also discuss the plan to combat cardiovascular diseases.

Tomorrow's Cabinet of Ministers meeting will begin with a secret session - in a special room protected from any eavesdropping, the Prime Minister and ministers will discuss a number of issues that constitute state secrets. Defense Minister Andris Spruds will report on the situation regarding the procurement of artillery shells. A. Spruds will also discuss the readiness of the Latvian armed forces to fulfill NATO's goals and requirements.

On the agenda for the secret part of the government meeting is also information from Interior Minister Richard Kozlovskis about the protection of foreign officials in Latvia.

In the open part of the government meeting, ministers will be briefed on the plan for military exercises of Latvian and foreign armed forces on Latvian territory.

However, the agenda for tomorrow's Cabinet meeting is not limited to strictly 'military' issues. For instance, Health Minister Hosam Abu Meri will present a draft plan for improving cardiovascular health for this year and next. "In the European Union, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are recognized as the leading cause of mortality, the main factor for morbidity and disability.

However, the standardized mortality rates due to CVD among the residents of Latvia are twice as high as the EU average, with the difference for those under 64 years old being even three times higher. In cases of premature death from CVD, almost a quarter of the deceased had cardiomyopathy as the cause of death, which, in turn, is 40% attributed to alcohol (adding unspecified cardiomyopathies, even 70%). It is this premature mortality (ages 0-64) from CVD that significantly impacts the negative public health indicators in Latvia (life expectancy, disease burden)," the Ministry of Health reports.
