The ruling Latvian party "New Unity" has proposed to completely cease economic ties with Russia by the end of the year.
The ruling party coalition "New Unity" believes that since the European Union (EU) has been unable to agree on another package of sanctions against Russia due to the veto of several EU countries, decisions to cease economic ties with Russia must be made at the national level, the party informed the LETA agency.
According to the party, Latvian entrepreneurs should halt imports and exports with Russia by the end of 2026.
Prime Minister Evika Silina ("New Unity") will instruct the Ministry of Economics, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare a detailed analysis and plan for ceasing passenger transport to Russia and introducing a ban on the retail sale of goods of Russian origin in Latvia by the end of March.
The Ministry of Transport will be tasked with preparing a detailed analysis of the flow of railway cargo to Russia and proposals for its cessation. The ministries must develop specific proposals and necessary changes to regulations.
As reported, the coalition party "Progressives" also previously suggested that the Ministry of Economics develop a plan to cease trade with aggressor states.
