The Prime Minister prepared a report on the work done and plans for this year.
Today at 10:00, an extraordinary government meeting is taking place remotely, where the Prime Minister presents to her Cabinet colleagues a report prepared for the Saeima on the work done and priorities for the current year. Just this morning, the report was not available to the public and was classified as 'restricted access.' However, this classification has just been lifted.
The introductory part of the report states that 'Prime Minister Evika Silina leads the government as a team that jointly implements important goals and necessary changes for the development of the country. 2025 was characterized for Latvia by targeted and results-oriented actions. The geopolitical tension in Europe, caused by Russia's aggression in Ukraine and hybrid threats, as well as uncertainty in the international economy and demographic issues, defined the government's priorities and the need for timely and balanced decisions.
The Cabinet's activities were based on four interconnected priorities — strengthening security and defense, supporting families with children, economic growth, and reducing bureaucratic burdens. These priorities were integrated into budget planning, improving regulatory frameworks, investment, defense, and foreign policy, as well as European Union policies, ensuring continuity and clear progress towards long-term goals.
The internal and external security of Latvia in 2025 was the government's main priority. Considering the changing conditions affecting the country's security, a comprehensive approach in the defense sector was implemented. The government made a clear and politically responsible decision to significantly increase defense funding — in 2026 it reaches 4.91% of GDP (for the first time in Latvia's history exceeding 2 billion euros) and in 2027 it will already be 5% of GDP. Thus, Latvia intends to protect itself and be a reliable NATO ally.
The government's decisions strengthened priority defense capabilities (air defense, missile artillery, coastal defense, and infantry fighting vehicles). By 2030, 3.49 billion euros have been attracted from SAFE. At the same time, the presence of NATO allies in Latvia has been secured, including the military presence of the United States, and the mandate of the Canadian contingent to lead the brigade in Latvia has been extended until 2029.
