Speaker of the Saeima: Russia must not be allowed to return to the international community

As the bloody war initiated by Russia continues, the return of this country to the international community must not be allowed, said Saeima Speaker Daiga Mierina on Tuesday at an extraordinary parliamentary session.

Mierina noted that in four years, the world has failed to stop the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine, the consequences of which have been destroyed lives, millions of refugees, and a huge number of casualties. She emphasized that the aggressor has not achieved its goals, and the war has turned into a protracted bloody conflict, while the Russian regime continues to use it as the foundation of its ideology.

According to Mierina, Russia seeks to return to the international stage through culture and sports, but this must not be allowed, as the symbols of the aggressor and the performances of athletes under its flag have no place in Europe. She criticized the concessions made by international organizations that allowed athletes from the aggressor country to participate in the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Speaker of the Saeima emphasized that Russia continues to attack the civilian population of Ukraine, deliberately destroying energy infrastructure and trying to break the will of the people; however, Ukraine has survived another winter and remains unyielding.

The Baltic States feel the threat from Russia particularly acutely, which is why they consistently and loudly advocate for tough sanctions and European unity, the speaker noted.

As reported, on Thursday, the Saeima adopted a statement in support of Ukraine, dedicated to its four-year resistance to Russia's armed aggression.

The statement notes that the Saeima pays tribute to the people and armed forces of Ukraine, who have heroically resisted Russia's full-scale invasion for four years.
