Silina Discussed Steps Taken to Support Ukraine with Merz

Prime Minister Evika Silina discussed with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz the steps taken to support Ukraine in Munich, LETA reports.

This week, the head of government was on a working visit to Munich, where she participated in the annual Munich Security Conference and held bilateral meetings with officials and representatives of international companies, the LETA agency reported from the State Chancellery.

On the second day of the conference, the Prime Minister of Latvia participated in the main sessions, where U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky delivered speeches.

“U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized in his speech that the U.S. and Europe have always been and will continue to be allies — strong individually, but even stronger together. We will not allow anyone to undermine transatlantic ties. Europe and the U.S. together are shaping a stronger, safer, and more prosperous future. In Latvia, we are already taking action. Clear actions are needed on both sides of the Atlantic right now,” Silina emphasized.

On the second day of the Munich Security Conference, the Latvian Prime Minister met with Merz. The parties discussed what steps are already being taken to assist Ukraine, as well as how to strengthen and intensify transatlantic relations with the U.S.

Silina and Merz discussed the development of the European defense industry. Latvia, together with Germany, already has several concrete projects — with both Rheinmetall and Diehl Defence and DND, the Prime Minister noted, emphasizing that this demonstrates Europe’s ability to produce armaments for its own defense.

The interlocutors agreed that action is necessary right now. The defense industry needs to be developed immediately, support for Ukraine needs to be strengthened immediately, while simultaneously limiting Russia and its ability to finance the war. “We also expect additional sanctions from the U.S., which Rubio announced in his speech,” Silina stressed.
