The Saeima rejected the draft statement of the Latvian parliament in support of awarding Donald Trump the Nobel Prize.
Eight hours after the start of work, during the second plenary session of the Saeima, the deputies finally reached the draft statement prepared by the opposition faction "Latvia First." It is worth recalling that this draft statement supports awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to the President of the United States. This document was included in the agenda of the previous plenary session on January 29, but the deputies did not get to this item on the agenda last week, as they spent over 10 hours discussing the annual foreign policy debates. However, as previously reported, today the ruling coalition, in order to diplomatically save face, devised a clever move - to prepare an alternative statement expressing gratitude and support to the United States, but without mentioning the Nobel Prize for Trump. This statement was adopted by an overwhelming majority of votes in the morning, and thus the ruling party considered that the draft statement from "Latvia First" could be easily rejected.
Presenting her draft, the head of the "Latvia First" faction, Linda Liepiņa, noted that the United States has been and remains our main strategic partner and the main guarantor of security. And if Donald Trump is currently at the helm of the country, it is only logical to support awarding him the Nobel Prize, especially considering that he certainly deserves it.
In turn, independent Saeima deputy Alexander Kiršteins, in his characteristic ironic manner, remarked that if the ruling majority wants to be a laughingstock to the end, it should reject this draft statement. The deputy reminded that some ruling politicians have already become ridiculous when they expressed disapproval regarding the decision of Saeima Speaker Daiga Mierina to support the letter in favor of the "Nobel Prize" for Trump. "In fact, "New Unity" was very late with its draft statement, and now the "Green Farmers" have twisted their arms by supporting the letter for the prize for Trump," said the deputy.
One way or another, after the adoption of the alternative statement, the fate of the draft from the "Latvia First" faction was decided, and it was rejected, with even a refusal to refer it to the Saeima committee.
