The party mate of the Speaker of the Saeima admitted that he would have signed the letter in support of Trump as well.
One of the leaders of the parliamentary faction of the Union of Greens and Farmers (UGF), Augusts Brigmanis, stated in an interview with TV-24 that when the Speaker of the Saeima from the UGF, Daiga Mierina, was approached by the speakers of the parliaments of the USA and Israel, she had virtually no choice - it was in the national interest to sign this letter in support of awarding Donald Trump the Nobel Peace Prize. "Let me remind you that prior to this letter, the US Congress voted to provide financial assistance to the Baltic states to strengthen their defense," noted A. Brigmanis. The experienced politician is convinced that although the other senior officials of Latvia do not publicly acknowledge this, they surely breathed a sigh of relief upon learning that Mierina signed the letter.
"If I were in her place, I would have waited a bit, but I would have signed it anyway, as it was a request that could not be declined," the politician concluded.
