Skaidrīte Abama will retire after the current parliament's term ends.
Independent Saeima deputy Skaidrīte Abama expressed her disappointment regarding the political situation in the country and what is happening in the Saeima during an interview with Latvian Radio.
The politician left the "Progressives" party last summer - the last straw was the government's "restart," or the replacement of individual ministers, which, in her opinion, was a façade.
In the program "Krustpunktā" on Latvian Radio, Abama admitted that she had long been reluctant to enter politics, but the "Progressives" seemed to her to be the "perfect party – young, energetic, honest, to some extent revolutionaries who want to fight for human rights and reduce inequality."
However, she became disappointed in politics. "These are my personal traits – I worked in a professional team [the Competition Council], where we felt neutrality to any political pressure and desire. But now, entering the coalition, you see that there is a big brother and I suddenly found myself in the company of a little brother, where the backbone is not yet so strong.
And there are political considerations – we have to hold on here, there will be municipal elections, we will swallow that bitter pill, agree with one decision, with another. I realized that for me these compromises were too many because I am used to being responsible for my decisions," Abama justified.
In the Saeima, according to her, "the principle of the choir has begun – become like a chorister, a button pusher; if you say you can't push the button, at least abstain."
"Or if I express a critical point of view or disagree with a proposal put forward by the coalition, a call comes from poor [the leader of the "Progressives" faction in the Saeima] Andris Šuvajevs [with a question], who asks if Abama even knows where she is, that she is in the coalition. I could not tolerate such things for long," the deputy admitted.
The last straw was the government's restart.
The last straw was when the prime minister announced the restart of the government, which, in the deputy's opinion, was a façade. But she stated this after the municipal elections so as not to "undermine the chances of the 'Progressives'" in them.
"There were too many compromises. It was a façade – 4 by 4, a new beautiful life will begin. The compromise was in such a situation that there were no decisions on either 'Rail Baltica', or 'airBaltic', nor, as it now turns out, with regional bus carriers. Well, the 'Progressives' should not continue to occupy this ministerial seat just to sit quietly and calmly until the elections. This is a matter of responsibility for the prime minister and the finance minister – that they participate," Abama believes.
The independent deputy stated that she does not intend to join another party and, apparently, will retire after the current Saeima's term ends.
