At the picket "No to Migrant Quotas" held on Wednesday evening in Riga, opposite the Cabinet of Ministers building, only about sixty people participated, the State Police reported to the LETA agency.
Currently, the picket has concluded, and no incidents have been recorded.
The aim of the picket was to "express a clear and strong condemnation of the inaction of government officials."
By June of this year, Latvia needs to implement the requirements of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, which provides for three options:
– to accept about 100 migrants from other EU countries,
– to make a financial contribution of 20,000 euros for each unaccepted refugee (2 million euros for 100 people),
– or to provide technical assistance to other states.
Previously, Latvia did not support the first two options, believing that it was in a special situation as it itself faces increased pressure from illegal migration on the eastern border of the country. In this regard, Latvia proposed to apply an exception to avoid financial payments or accepting individuals. However, Brussels decided otherwise.
The most frustrating thing is that several countries, including Poland and Estonia, received exemptions from accepting migrants, but Latvia did not.
