Will the state help with heating bill payments?

What plan is on the table for representatives of the ruling coalition?

This evening, a journalist from Latvian TV asked the leaders of the three ruling factions in the Saeima if they already have any plans on the table to support residents in light of the expected high heating bills at the beginning of February.

The head of the "New Unity" faction in the Saeima, Edmunds Jurēvics, stated that it would be irresponsible on his part to make any promises regarding this matter. He leans towards the idea that the main support for low-income individuals should come from local governments - the relevant law on the mechanism for providing such support was adopted three years ago. The politician also reminded that local governments have already urged housing management and heat suppliers not to impose penalties and fines in case of late bill payments.

In turn, the leader of the parliamentary faction "Progressives," Andris Šuvajevs, believes that people with low and below-average incomes could qualify for assistance in paying utility bills, but he also does not have a specific plan for this yet.

The head of the "Green Farmers" faction, Harijs Rokpelņš, indicated that such a plan may emerge from the Ministry of Economics, and specialists are currently conducting the necessary calculations.

The authorities do not have much time for calculations - residents will start receiving the first bills in just 7-10 days.
