The Riga City Council is searching for a suitable name for the promenade on Mukusalas Street, reports the LETA agency citing the municipality.
Residents of Riga are invited to participate and submit their suggestions for the name of the promenade on the website riga.lv by January 31.
In the survey, one can vote for one of the names proposed by the municipality or suggest their own, providing justification.
The proposed options include: "Mukusalas Promenade," "Promenade of Light," "Tornakalns Promenade," and "Promenade of Knowledge."
As explained by the chairman of the Riga City Council, considering that the promenade connects the garden plots on Lucavsala with the National Library, a name reflecting national values — people, talents, literacy, courage, and knowledge — should be chosen.
As of January 21, more than 350 residents of Riga have already participated in the voting or submitted their ideas.
The suggestions will be collected and evaluated, and the final decision on the name of the promenade will be made by the Riga City Council.
As the LETA agency has confirmed, participation in the survey does not require identification, so it can involve not only residents of Riga but also those from other municipalities.
LETA has already reported that the two-year construction works on the Mukusalas Street promenade in Riga have been completed, costing 20.8 million euros.
On December 22, the 2.3-kilometer promenade was put into operation.
The reconstruction of the Mukusalas Street promenade, which began in December 2023, became one of the largest investment projects of the Riga municipality aimed at renewing urban infrastructure to transform the Daugava waterfront into a modern and visually appealing public space.
The total funding for the works to strengthen the waterfront and build accompanying infrastructure amounted to 20.8 million euros excluding VAT. 85% of the expenses were financed through a loan from the State Treasury, while the remaining 15% came from the budget of the Riga municipality.
