Understanding the security interests of the United States, the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, hopes that Denmark and the US will find a mutually acceptable solution to the Greenland issue, said presidential advisor Mārtiņš Dregeris to the LETA agency.
According to the president, the issue of strengthening security in the Arctic should be addressed through dialogue among NATO member countries, as well as between Denmark and the United States on a bilateral basis, while adhering to the principles of international law.
The President of Latvia also emphasized that Denmark is a reliable NATO member, and there should be no doubt about Denmark's ability to withstand and protect Greenland from potential Russian and Chinese threats.
According to Dr. Dregeris, the president has previously highlighted that Denmark is a strong democracy and a reliable NATO ally, and Greenland is an integral part of Denmark.
It has already been reported that US President Donald Trump threatened on Friday to impose tariffs on countries that do not support the transition of Greenland under US control, reiterating that this is necessary for US national security.
Trump and the White House have repeatedly stated that Greenland should become part of the United States, not ruling out the use of military force to achieve this goal.
