Silina in the Saeima Survived Another Vote of No Confidence

The majority of Saeima deputies today rejected the opposition's request for the resignation of Prime Minister Evika Silina ("New Unity"), LETA reports.

This time, the resignation of Silina was demanded by the National Alliance (NA).

The NA referred to the National Security Concept of 2023, which states that "from January 1, 2026, content created by public media must be only in the Latvian language and in languages belonging to the European cultural space, thereby promoting the belonging of all residents of Latvia to a unified information space based on Latvian and other languages of the European Union, the European Economic Area, and EU candidate countries. After the cessation of state funding for content in the Russian language, the process of forming a unified information space would be completed, while in commercial media, content in Russian could exist on private funds."

According to the NA, the Cabinet of Ministers continues to allocate funding to public media for the creation of content in the Russian language, which contradicts the goal of promoting the belonging of all residents of Latvia to a unified information space.

"We believe that the content in the law on public electronic media and their management in minority languages should not be created exclusively in Russian, and these norms do not contradict the provisions of the National Security Concept," the NA stated.

The government of Latvia consists of Prime Minister Silina and 14 ministers from the parties "Progressives," "New Unity," and the Union of Greens and Farmers (UGF).

As previously reported, opposition parties in the Saeima demanded Silina's resignation four times last year, but the Prime Minister survived the vote of confidence each time.

The last vote of confidence that Silina survived was in October of last year. At that time, 46 deputies voted against her resignation, 38 voted in favor, and one deputy, Uldis Augulis (UGF), abstained. Meanwhile, Andrei Celapiters, who was an independent deputy at that time and has now joined the UGF faction, did not participate in the vote.
