Farewell to Imants Freibergs, husband of former President of Latvia Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, who passed away on the first day of the new year, will take place on Saturday, January 10, at 14:00 at the Riga Dome Cathedral, according to a statement from the deceased's relatives published by the former president on Twitter, reports LETA.

According to the agency's archive, Imants Freibergs was born on March 12, 1934, in Valmiera. In 1944, he found himself in refugee camps in Germany, and in 1948, he moved to France.

According to open sources, Freibergs and Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga got married on June 16, 1960.

Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga served as the President of Latvia for two terms — from 1999 to 2003 and from 2003 to 2007.

Imants Freibergs was a specialist in computer science. He taught at the University of Quebec in Montreal, where he led computer science programs, and was also a professor at the University of Montpellier in France, at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, and worked at the University of Latvia. He served as the president of the Latvian Association of Information Technologies and Telecommunications.

He participated in the council that organized the first Latvian Youth Festivals. He was a member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the Order of the Three Stars, 1st class.
