How much time will be needed to approve the main financial law is unknown. The ruling party is focused on ensuring strict coalition discipline.
An extraordinary plenary session is scheduled for this Wednesday to discuss and adopt the budget for 2026 and the accompanying package of budget bills in their final reading. A few numbers: the budget package includes 47 bills, to which a total of 260 proposals have been submitted! As for the budget project for 2026, 290 proposals have been submitted. Thus, the deputies will have to evaluate a total of 550 proposals! If the opposition decides to debate the majority of them, then... it is clear that the deputies will not be able to review all the budget bills in one day. Moreover, the deputies have agreed not to sit after 21:00. Therefore, it can be assumed that the budget debates will continue on Thursday, pushing the usual agenda to a later date.
As is known, the ruling coalition in the Saeima has a minimal majority. Therefore, the task of the ruling party, namely "New Unity," is to ensure the necessary majority in the plenary hall. This means - no business trips and even no illnesses! The ruling coalition has agreed that all 52 deputies who support the government will be continuously present in the hall - until the vote is completed.
It is evident that in the end, the coalition will adopt the budget. The only question is whether the "green farmers" will again play the role of rebels and support certain proposals from the opposition - in exchange for the opposition's support for their, the "green farmers'", proposals.
