The issue of dismantling the railway rails at the Russian border needs to be coordinated with the Baltic countries, as well as with Poland and Finland, stated Prime Minister Evika Silina.
She noted that this issue was discussed some time ago during a closed part of a government meeting. “This is one of the measures that the army has identified as one of the possible options,” said Silina.
According to her, responsible agencies from various sectors — transport, economy, internal affairs, and others — have been tasked with assessing what the consequences might be if such a step is taken.
The army, together with other agencies, must also evaluate the timelines for carrying out such actions, the Prime Minister indicated. “We expect a responsible decision from these agencies. Of course, everything must be done jointly,” said Silina, emphasizing the need for coordination not only with the Baltics but also with Poland and Finland.
She explained that as soon as any country makes any moves at the border, the mentioned states always try to act as synchronously as possible and align their interests. “This is another important aspect, as such a decision is not only the army's decision. We currently have a situation that needs to be assessed in a much broader context — not only within Latvia but also at the international level among several Baltic states, Poland, and Finland,” the Prime Minister reiterated.
As reported by bb.lv, several ministries and special services have been tasked with preparing a conclusion by the end of the year regarding the impact that the dismantling of the rails at the Russian border will have on Latvia.
