The ‘Progressives’ party does not plan to leave the current government, this position was expressed to the LETA agency by the co-chairman of the party and the head of the ‘Progressives’ parliamentary faction in the Saeima, Andris Shuvaev.
“We see no grounds for that. The Union of Greens and Farmers has been rocking the coalition for two months and trying to create the impression that we are doing this, but society is not foolish — it sees what is actually happening,” he stated.
Currently, the priority of the political force is the adoption of the state budget, which is expected in two weeks. It is too early to speculate about the political situation after the budget is approved.
“The decisive role will be with the ‘New Unity’ and their vision for further joint work,” Shuvaev noted.
The politician referred to the investigation initiated by the Prosecutor General's Office regarding the allocation of support to the woodworking industry. According to him, it will be possible to talk about political responsibility after clarifying whether the additional funding was legal.
“Politicians cannot evade responsibility,” emphasized Shuvaev, adding that even the opposition in the Saeima has not paid due attention to this issue.
The situation in the Ministry of Agriculture was also addressed at the ‘Progressives’ congress on Saturday. Addressing party members, Shuvaev stated that the scandal in the ministry indicates that the politics of the 90s have not disappeared — we still live in a country where influential millionaires can lobby for favorable political decisions for themselves. As a result, the welfare of society suffers.
In the next political cycle, the ‘Progressives’ will focus on developing a sustainable economy and addressing the issue of high living costs. Another priority of the party is politics free from narrow interests and corruption.
If elected to the Saeima, the ‘Progressives’ will not cooperate with the political force ‘Latvia First’ led by Ainars Šlesers, nor with the parties ‘For Stability!’ and ‘Sovereign Power,’ Shuvaev confirmed.
As previously reported, today at the congress, the ‘Progressives’ are meeting with entrepreneurs and discussing priorities for the year of parliamentary elections, the party announced.
