The creators of an unusual souvenir achieved the impossible — fitting three Baltic countries into one small air freshener. Latvia received a declaration of love, Lithuania a geographical outline, and Estonia national colors. Social media users appreciated this geography lesson.
The discussion was sparked by a photo of an air freshener listed for sale on the Vinted platform for €4.99. It prominently features the words "I Love Latvia".
This seems to be where the connection to Latvia ends.
In shape, the souvenir resembles a map of Lithuania much more, and its blue-black-white coloring almost inevitably evokes associations with the flag of Estonia.
The Baltic puzzle quickly made its way to social media, where users began to determine which country the product was actually dedicated to.
"The inscription should at least be in Lithuanian," noted user a_agneta.
"Lithuania got the outline of the country," explained ironiqueen.
However, this explanation did not satisfy everyone.
"I understand, but it’s less noticeable. The English text here, in my opinion, doesn’t fit at all," replied a_agneta.
Soon, the discussion moved far beyond geography.
"So, Kārums is still ours :))," joked ilze.ozolina, recalling the popular Latvian curd snack, around whose origin humorous disputes periodically arise in the Baltic countries.
Other participants in the discussion offered their own versions of the origin of the Baltic hybrid.
"This is intended for Estonians who love Latvia and really like the silhouette of Lithuania," suggested one user.
Another saw in the product an exclusively rational approach from the designer: "The Baltic countries are depicted economically."
There was also room for romance. One commentator suggested not to look for the Estonian flag in the colors: "These are our blue Latvian skies, stunning black earth, and white, positive thoughts!"
Another version sounded almost like a ready-made tourist slogan: "Lives in Lithuania, under a foreign flag, and loves Latvia. All is well."
And someone reduced the entire geographical mystery to one phrase: "When you are in Estonia, but your heart is in Latvia."
Some users even suggested that the designer did not make a mistake at all but intentionally set up a small geography test for the buyers.
"Made with purpose. So that we always keep in our hearts the desire to travel through all the Baltic countries and learn where everything is," joked one of the discussion participants.
However, such quirks may have a quite prosaic explanation. As one commentator noted, mistakes occur when the design is developed in one country, approved in another, and the person familiar with local realities simply does not see the finished product before production.
How exactly this Baltic hybrid came to be is unknown. However, the designer inadvertently managed to create almost the perfect souvenir of regional unity.
Lithuania got the shape, Estonia the colors, and Latvia the love.
