In the second half of this week, Latvia will frequently experience rain, with heavy downpours and thunderstorms expected in many places, meteorologists forecast.
Precipitation is expected daily. The sky will be predominantly cloudy and will only occasionally clear up. A weak to moderate wind from the west will blow. On Thursday, the air temperature will rise to +17…+21 degrees, and in the following days it will become a bit cooler.
From Wednesday to Sunday, the total amount of precipitation in most parts of the country is expected to be 20–60 millimeters, with the highest likelihood of reaching 100 millimeters in some areas, particularly along the coast of Southern Kurzeme. For comparison, the average monthly precipitation norm in Latvia is 61 millimeters.
Next week, rain is also expected at times, but there will be less precipitation at the beginning of the week. Frost is not currently forecasted.
As reported earlier, after the rains of the past days, the water level in some small rivers has risen sharply. If the rains continue, some bodies of water may overflow in September. The highest risk of flooding is expected in Kurzeme and Vidzeme.
According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, by 9 a.m. on September 2, the most precipitation fell in Priekuļi — 79.3 millimeters, or 136% of the monthly norm. In Zosēni, 58.4 millimeters fell, which is 102% of the monthly norm.
