A new procedure has come into effect in Latvia, providing for compensation for direct damage caused to agriculture by military incidents, including drone attacks and other hybrid threats. Depending on the availability of insurance, the state will reimburse up to 90% of the incurred losses.
As of July 10, 2026, a new compensation mechanism for damage caused to agriculture as a result of military incidents is in effect in Latvia. This was reported by the Rural Support Service (LAD).
If the property is insured against military risks or such insurance is unavailable on the market, the state will compensate up to 90% of the direct damage. If military risk insurance is available but the property owner has not obtained a policy, the compensation amount will be up to 75%.
Compensation is provided for damage to crops, agricultural plants, forest plantations, livestock, as well as equipment used in agriculture.
Farmers must report the military incident to the LAD no later than three working days after it occurs, by sending a statement to the email [email protected].
The fact of the military incident will be confirmed by the National Armed Forces. After that, LAD specialists will assess the extent of the damage and make a decision on compensation and its amount within a month.
Funds for damage compensation will be allocated from the state budget program "Funds for Unforeseen Cases." The new rules are designed to support agricultural producers affected by military incidents and hybrid threats.
