Despite the summer weather, sunny autumn begins in Latvia on August 6. This means that the brightest quarter of the year has already ended, and the duration of daylight will now gradually decrease.
In Latvia, the brightest three-month period of the year, known as sunny summer, has come to an end. Sunny autumn begins on August 6, according to data from timeanddate.com.
Sunny summer lasted from May 7 to August 5. Now, the daylight will gradually decrease, and the darkest quarter of the year will be the period from November 6 to February 4 — referred to as sunny winter.
This division is based not on air temperature, but on the duration of daylight. In other words, sunny seasons are determined by the amount of daylight, rather than the calendar or weather.
At the same time, there are other ways to define the seasons. For instance, astronomical summer began on June 21 and will end only on September 23, when the autumn equinox occurs. After that, astronomical autumn will begin, lasting until December 21 — the day of the winter solstice.
Another reference used is by meteorologists. Meteorological autumn begins only when the average daily temperature remains below +15 degrees for at least five consecutive days. This year, meteorological summer started on June 1.
Due to warm weather, meteorological autumn can arrive significantly later than the calendar autumn. For example, in 2023, it began only on October 4, marking the latest date in the history of observations.
For now, despite the start of sunny autumn, summer weather persists in Latvia, with daytime temperatures in the coming days reaching +30 degrees in some areas.
