The Latvian Centre for Environment, Geology and Meteorology has raised the warning level for heavy rains from yellow to orange. Very heavy precipitation is expected in the central part of the country on Thursday night, which may lead to flooding and damage to infrastructure.

According to meteorologists, an active cyclone is passing through the Baltic States. On Wednesday, heavy rains are expected mainly in the western part of Latvia, while at night the area of the most intense precipitation will shift to the central regions of the country.

In some places, very heavy rains and thunderstorms are forecasted.

An orange warning will be in effect from 8:00 PM on Wednesday to 8:00 AM on Thursday.

Meteorologists warn that due to the large amount of precipitation, the soil will quickly become saturated with moisture and will stop absorbing water. This may lead to the overload of stormwater drainage systems and rapid accumulation of water on the streets.

The most difficult situation may arise in low-lying areas and river floodplains, where there is a risk of flooding. In some places, water may affect residential homes, roads, and other infrastructure.

Residents are advised to avoid traveling through flooded areas of roads whenever possible, to monitor weather forecasts, and to consider the potential deterioration of road conditions during the night and morning hours.

According to the Latvian Centre for Environment, Geology and Meteorology, in the most affected areas, road washouts, damage to infrastructure, and, with significant water rise, the need for evacuation of residents cannot be ruled out.
