These eggs are mostly cheaper than the products of Latvian producers, however, the labeling raises questions. Discussions are also taking place on social media: some urge not to buy such eggs under any circumstances, while others believe that 'an egg is an egg' and it’s good if it can be bought cheaper. However, this time it’s about something else.
On the social network Threads, Liva posted a photo of eggs, but with a catch: “I have already heard that at farmers' markets, alongside their tomatoes, they sell vegetables bought at 'Maxima', passing them off as grown in their own garden. But cheap store-bought eggs with stamps — that’s a new level. I will learn my lesson for 4 euros — to check this too. You get a lesson for free, from someone else's experience.
Since I posted this in a local Facebook group, the organizer of the 'farmers' market' responded that everything is fine — the eggs are labeled correctly. Now I don’t even know what’s worse — if one seller is deceiving, or if the group organizer allows people to be misled and sells such products at the price of eco-eggs.”
The situation is being discussed online. Karlis admitted that he is hearing about such practices for the first time: “I don’t stand at markets, I deliver eggs directly to clients.”
Eduards has his own opinion: “It’s a double-edged sword. I think I’d rather buy eggs in the store. I’ve bought from farmers, but sometimes there were unpleasant cases. I haven’t had that with store-bought eggs.”
Albert is also surprised: “Third category eggs are already a rarity even in supermarkets, and at the farmers' market — that’s a new level. Harsh.”
Kaspars adds: “At the Central Market, there are also 'local' farm eggs. They are brought from Estonia and sold as local. I know farmers who buy vegetables at wholesale bases and then sell them at markets as if they grew them themselves.
So it’s better to go directly to the farms — you will see how everything is grown, you will be sure of the origin, and you can show your children real rural life.”
Vineta shares an unpleasant experience: “I am generally scared of markets and the food there. Once I was at the market early in the morning when the trucks were just arriving and all this 'preparation' was starting. And I will always remember that white van with smoked chickens — the chickens were lying right on the floor of the van, someone kicked them, and then they were laid out on the table. Very sad attitude.”
