Do you think that if you are not a military serviceman and have already passed the conscription age, then defense is not about you? The Ministry of Defense of Latvia postulates: "The defense of Latvia and the protection of Latvia's independence is the responsibility of the entire society, and... is carried out through the model of comprehensive national defense."
Prepare for War
Minister Andris Spruds ("Progressives") reported in the annual report "On the Progress of Implementing the Comprehensive National Defense System" that last year Latvia successfully conducted civil-military exercises Pilskalns; continued the construction of the Baltic Line fortification complex. "The focus was on the full operation of the National Defense Service, strengthening the reserve system, and increasing the combat capability of the National Armed Forces."
For its part, the National Guard is conducting a series of events with local authorities called Rupors, on "methods of action in the event of a military threat." These were held last year in regions quite distant from the external borders of the republic – in the Madona and Saldus municipalities. With the help of NATO, even an off-site crisis meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers was organized, simulating work in field conditions!
Particular attention is paid to the functioning of the national economy under military threat: 103 businesses and institutions received training on how, as so-called "critical infrastructure D," they will operate in a state of emergency or war.
Militarization from TikTok
"Resilience. Capability. Will," – under this motto, Latvia plans to prepare supplies of everything necessary for 72 hours, as well as evacuation plans. They "were created by learning from Ukraine's experience in fighting against the Russian occupying army."
The information resource Sargs.lv, under the Ministry of Defense, is now directing its efforts wherever an audience can be found – YouTube channels and even TikTok (recently, this social network has been banned for use on devices owned by the Riga municipality!).
"Informational videos were prepared about the military fortification of the state border and related issues – in particular, the procedure for land acquisition, as well as providing objective and verified information about the military exercises of the aggressor states 'West' that took place in 2025 on the territory of Belarus and Russia.
Survival Opportunities in Captivity
Meanwhile, in Liepaja, at the base of the Naval Forces Training Center, a seminar was held for media representatives – "to enhance survival capabilities." Among other things, the program included stress management skills in the event of captivity. Continuation of this important mission is planned for 2026...
Returning to economic issues, a crucial stage is represented by Cabinet of Ministers Rules No. 600: "Procedure for Concluding Strategic Partnership Agreements with the Ministry of Defense." According to it, up to 10,000,000 euros can be issued to a single entity – for the production of goods and services for military needs. The defense industry of the republic is growing rapidly – last year, 118 enterprises were registered.
