On the night of March 6, the first test tram passed along the newly laid track from "Kvadrats" to the new transfer center Kengarags, where the 7th tram, the 15th trolleybus, and bus routes from Jugla, Dauderi, and Darzini are planned to converge. And possibly some suburban routes.
The capital carrier "Rigas Satiksme" has announced that regular tram service to distant Kengarags is planned to start at the end of May. However, due to the engineering communication installation works, the construction permit has been extended until June.
The tram to distant Kengarags is being laid with the support of European funds. The total cost of the project is 28 million euros. Four kilometers of tram tracks have been laid, and approximately 30,000 square meters of asphalt pavement have been renewed or laid anew; the city has built a bike lane along the entire extension of the tram line.
According to the carrier, the extension of the tram to distant Kengarags is the first establishment of a new tram line in Riga since the collapse of the USSR. Previously, in 1984, a new tram route was laid to Imanta.
