Although warmer than usual weather is generally expected in Latvia in the coming months, summer may bring strong thunderstorms, hail, and sharp gusts of wind. Meteorologist Andris Viksna points out that under the influence of climate change, extreme weather events are becoming increasingly frequent.

Although meteorologists assess long-term forecasts with caution, current trends indicate that spring in Latvia will continue without a significant return of winter. However, spring in Latvia is traditionally unstable.

"Spring in Latvia has always been 'with teeth.' Frosts are possible in April and even in May," says Viksna.

Overall, forecasts suggest that in the spring months and early summer, air temperatures may be above the climatic norm. This does not exclude short-term cold spells or frosts in spring, which can create problems for farmers and gardeners. Warmer weather also means a higher likelihood of severe storms.

"Summer will definitely bring strong thunderstorms, hail, and sharp gusts of wind."

The meteorologist emphasizes that such extreme phenomena are becoming increasingly frequent. "We are already feeling it — this is no longer the future, it is happening now."

In recent decades, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events have increased.

"The frequency of these extreme phenomena and their manifestations are becoming more pronounced and causing greater damage."

There is also no reason to hope that this trend will weaken in the future. "There is no reason to believe that this situation will improve anytime soon," noted the meteorologist.
